Planning a student survey

a. University wide surveys

If you are thinking about running a university-wide student survey you need to request an approval from the Student Surveys Steering Group. This process applies to all new university wide surveys, examples may include: freshers survey, new student wellbeing survey, survey about supervision for PGR students etc.

b. Department, college or central services survey

If you are thinking about running a survey for your specific department, college or central service you do not need to seek the approval through a formal process, however it may be helpful to consult the following resources and the next section below:

For all surveys

In either case, it is vital that you consult the overview and a timeline of the student surveys. This will help you to decide on the best time to field your survey in order to maximise the responses rate and minimise the survey fatigue among your survey population. You may also find it useful to find out what questions were already asked and what data has already been collected so you don’t duplicate efforts.

If you would like to discuss any secondary survey data that may be available to you then please contact us at: surveys@admin.ox.ac.uk

If you are interested in learning how to use Jisc or Microsoft Forms for surveys, IT Services periodically run training on how to use these tools - the training is for Jisc 3 so will be useful to people already familiar with Jisc 2.  More information can be found here

If you would like to seek approval for a new, university wide survey then please follow the links below:
