Research Degrees

This page provides both the Policy and guidance on research degrees, and the Guidance on changes of circumstance for postgraduate research students (including suspension of status and extension of time).

Policy and guidance on research degrees

This Policy and guidance sets out the framework the University expects to see underpin the provision of its research degrees at Oxford. The Policy and guidance supplements the requirements for research degrees set out in the Examination Regulations.

The three main purposes of the Policy and guidance are:

  • To let staff know what they must do
  • To let students know what the rules are
  • To ensure that the University’s practice complies with external requirements and to articulate the way in which it complies.

The Policy and guidance has been updated for Michaelmas term 2025.
