Departmental reviews

Departmental reviews have a central role in the divisional and institutional oversight of the academic, organisational and financial activities of departments and faculties. Reviews are conducted jointly by the divisions and Education Committee on a 6 yearly cycle.

Reviews are a formal part of the University's quality assurance regime and help the University meet a wide range of its obligations under the UK Quality Code.

The review covers the quality of the academic activities in the faculty/department:

  • the quality of the research, research profile and strategy, and future challenges and opportunities
  • the quality of undergraduate and graduate programmes and their delivery
  • the organisation of the faculty/department, its management structures and the relationship between the faculty/department and the Division and the University's services
  • the relationship (structural and operational) between units within the faculty/department, and between the faculty/department and cognate subject areas and colleges to which it is linked in teaching and research.

It also considers the current and long-term financial position of, and fundraising arrangements for, the faculty/department, and its financial strategy.
